From Apprentice to Leading Strategy in Under Three Years

When I joined Venn as an apprentice, I did not have a long-term masterplan mapped out. I knew I wanted to work in marketing, I knew I was willing to work hard, and I knew I learned best by doing rather than watching from the sidelines.

My name is Ellisia, and just under three years later, I now lead the strategy function within the business.

That progression did not happen because I had everything figured out at the start. It happened because agency life moves quickly, and if you are prepared to move with it, you grow just as quickly.

Starting Out as an Apprentice

Coming into the business as an apprentice meant I was exposed to everything from day one. Client calls, deadlines, feedback, performance reviews, website builds, content planning. There was no long period of observation before responsibility.

Agency environments are busy by nature. There are multiple clients, different industries, shifting priorities and constant deadlines. That pace can feel intense, but it also forces you to learn at speed. You develop confidence by contributing, not by waiting until you feel completely ready.

As I progressed into a Junior Copywriter role, my focus shifted from simply producing content to understanding why we were producing it. I began to see how content connected to search demand, how tone of voice influenced brand positioning, and how structure affected performance.

Moving into a Senior Copywriter position deepened that understanding. I became more focused on SEO performance, keyword intent, and how different pages worked together within a wider site structure. It was no longer just about writing well. It was about writing strategically.

Moving Into Strategy

The transition into a Junior Strategist role changed my perspective completely. Strategy sits at the centre of everything in digital marketing. It connects SEO, content, design and development. It requires you to think commercially as well as creatively.

What I love most about working in SEO and strategy is that it is layered. It is never just one task. You might start by analysing keyword data, but that quickly evolves into reviewing site architecture, evaluating internal linking, restructuring service pages, or mapping out international growth through country folders.

There is something incredibly rewarding about auditing a website and identifying exactly what is holding it back. Sometimes it is technical foundations. Sometimes it is weak content structure. Sometimes it is misalignment between user intent and page messaging.

Working closely with design and development teams is also a part of that process. A website has to look strong, but it also has to perform. Structure, navigation, hierarchy and content all work together. When those elements align, you see measurable results.

That balance between creativity and data is what keeps strategy interesting. It is analytical, but it is also human. You are constantly thinking about how real users search, navigate and convert.

Why Agencies Accelerate Growth

Agency life is not slow or predictable, and that is exactly why progression can happen quickly. You are exposed to different industries, different challenges and different client personalities. You learn how to manage expectations, communicate clearly and prioritise effectively.

There was never a formal roadmap that said, “This is how you will reach this position.” Progression came from taking ownership, asking questions, volunteering for responsibility and being willing to step slightly outside my comfort zone.

Each role built on the previous one. Copywriting taught me clarity and structure. Senior level work taught me performance thinking and accountability. Strategy taught me commercial awareness and long-term planning.

Under three years in, I now oversee the strategic direction across accounts. That still feels surreal to say, but it is proof of what can happen in the right environment.

What I Value Most

The part of my role I value most is the ability to see the bigger picture. Strategy is not about isolated tasks. It is about building foundations that support sustainable growth.

That might mean restructuring a website to improve crawlability. It might mean building out country-specific folders to support international search visibility. It might mean redesigning core service pages so they align properly with search intent and commercial goals.

Seeing those changes translate into performance improvements is incredibly motivating.

There is also something powerful about supporting a team and helping others develop their own confidence in SEO and strategy. Growth does not stop once you reach a certain level. If anything, it accelerates.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, starting as an apprentice gave me the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment from the beginning. Being in an agency meant that learning was fast, practical and constant.

Progression is not always about waiting your turn. Sometimes it is about raising your hand, stepping into responsibility and trusting that you will grow into the role.

In under three years, my journey at Venn has taken me from apprentice to leading strategy across the business. It has required hard work, adaptability and a willingness to keep learning, but it has also shown me how quickly development can happen when you are immersed in the right environment.

At Venn, we believe in learning through doing. We believe in progression that comes from real responsibility and real opportunity. If you are looking for a place where growth is earned through experience rather than time served, it is worth exploring what that could look like for you.
